Every loco and unit we cover, sorted by who built it. Each builder's page groups its diesels and electrics by model, lists the multiple units and railmotors, and counts up the steam engines from the class rosters. Rebuilds are listed under whoever did the rebuilding, and locos that have changed hands show up under their new owner's class too, with a note saying where they came from.

The light band is each company's life, from its founding to its takeover, merger or closure; where we don't know how a company ended, it fades out after the last thing we could confirm. The darker line runs from the first to the last year it built something we cover, and each dot is a class, placed at the year its first engines were built. Arrows mark where a business passed to another builder on the chart. Each builder's page lists its history with sources.

For the steam builders batch by batch, see Mike Quirk's builder's list.
