The IMU160s were ordered in 2004, when Queensland Rail needed more trains to go with the upgrade and duplication of the Gold Coast line. The first order was for sixteen units, and the class eventually grew to 28 three-car sets, numbered 161 to 188. They were built by Downer EDI Rail at Maryborough in partnership with Bombardier Transportation, and share their design with Perth's Transperth B-series, V/Line's VLocity and Adelaide's 4000 class, with different headlights. The exposed air-conditioning pods on the roof are the giveaway.
Their introduction didn't go entirely to plan. In early 2007 the air-conditioning units were found to be 10 millimetres too wide for the loading gauge, and had to be sorted out before the first IMU entered service on the Gold Coast line on 28 May 2007. Deliveries continued through to 2011.
Being interurban sets, they have larger seats, luggage racks and accessible toilets, which sets them apart from the SMU260s they otherwise closely resemble. Mechanically they're the same, with Bombardier MITRAC traction and a 130 km/h top speed, and the two classes can run together. Two IMUs are commonly coupled to make a six-car train.
On 31 January 2013, IMU173 failed to stop at Cleveland station and ran through the end of the line into the station's toilet block, injuring 14 people, none seriously.
Since July 2023 the IMU160s have been going through a major refurbishment, with new vinyl flooring, improved Wi-Fi and mostly sideways seating in one of the driving cars to give more standing room.
