The 2450 class was introduced in 1979 as an evolution of the 2400 class, adding air-conditioning, aluminium cabinet doors and upgraded generators. Eighteen were built by Clyde, numbered 2450 to 2467, and they went into service from May 1979. Like the 2400s they worked general freight around Queensland, and before electrification they were the regular power at the Gregory mine in the Bowen Basin.

2467 was withdrawn in 1989 and scrapped, and the other seventeen were all rebuilt at Redbank Workshops between 1999 and 2002 as members of the 2300 class, so the 2450 class no longer exists in its original form.
