The SCTs were the first locos SCT ever bought new: fifteen EMD GT46C-ACes built by Downer EDI at Cardiff, NSW, in 2007 and 2008. They've got a 16-cylinder EMD 710 and AC traction, and going AC meant SCT could do the work of 20 DC locos with 15. That works out to three locos instead of four between Melbourne and Adelaide, and two instead of three from Adelaide to Perth. SCT's trains also carry a tank car with 50,000 litres of diesel so the locos can be refuelled on the run.
They started out on SCT's Adelaide, Melbourne, Parkes and Perth trains. Since SCT began its own Melbourne to Brisbane service in 2017, they've worked into Bromelton too. SCT007 is named "Geoff (James Bond) Smith", after the company's boss.
