The two members of the 1900 class were built in 1956 by Commonwealth Engineering Company to Budd car principles. With two AEC AH590 engines each, they were very uneconomical compared to the 2000 class. Only 1901 exists today (1900 was written off in an accident), and it's kept by QR as part of its Heritage Fleet. Over the years it's been chartered by enthusiast groups for tours, and QR has also used it for route training and inspections.
At one stage 1901 was stored at the Ipswich Railway Workshops, heavily tagged by graffiti artists and out of running order after a fire in the electrical cabinet. It was fixed up and made available again in late 2006.
